Ceiling Murals by Richard Bagguley

Ceiling murals are painted directly on ceilings. As we have discussed earlier in our blog that mural can make a dull space look bigger and lively, same goes for these murals. Ceilings are among the toughest kinds of surfaces to be painted. It requires years of experience and artistic view to paint these kinds of murals.

Some of the famous ceiling murals are:

1. Ceiling of Grand Central Terminal's Main Concourse

2. Michelangelo's Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel

There are different techniques to depict objects onto ceilings which include fresco, stencils, decals and trompe l’oeil.

Trompe l’oeil murals are appealing as they present a three dimensional view. The main idea behind these murals is to create an illusion, an illusion which can trick the eyes of viewers. And this can be achieved with the help of expert artists only. Trompe l’oeil murals are great pieces of artwork.

Artists use trompe l’oeil method to make the subject appear more lively and larger. Have a look at this ceiling mural by Richard Bagguley:

Mixture of paint and plaster is used in fresco technique. This method of painting ceilings was quite popular during the renaissance period and most of churches in Europe have fresco ceilings. In this method permanent image is formed by adding pigment to thin plaster and paint in small sections.

Mural artists use stencils and decals to create artworks because these are less expensive and less time consuming.

Although painting techniques have evolved in recent year but the beauty of hand painted murals are unbeatable.

The Secret History of Mural Art

What is mural art?

A mural is essentially a large realistic painting which is painted on a solid surface such as a wall, a ceiling or a permanent fixture.  Murals are not ordinary paintings; these paintings have a purpose which is deeper than what we can perceive through our eyes. Mural art can be easily identified as they are painted according to the interiors of a place or room with a slightly different artistry than the normal art forms.

Muralists pay great attention to the details in order to assure that the space is accurately interpreted in terms of the dimensions and lighting. Outdoor murals are quite common; you have most likely seen one on the side of a wall on your travels. Muralists are mostly commissioned by owners to create exterior murals. The time spent on a mural depends on the price paid by the hirers. Street murals are usually sponsored by the government or a business to attract passersby.

Where does mural art originate from?

Mural art originated 30,000 years ago when murals were engraved into exteriors.  The first mural paintings were allegedly carved into caves; historians have discovered the paintings dating back to the upper Palaeolithic times. Many ancient murals have been preserved by the caves in which they were carved in.  The carvings in fact capture the lifestyle and inhabitant of the people during this period of time.  We are able to piece together our own anecdotes and understand the people culturally with these historical paintings.

Modern murals

Modern murals are typically painted using oil paints or water-based paints.  Contemporary art is very different to traditional murals and it has now been adapted to be painted on canvases and then transferred onto walls, ceilings or permanent fixtures.

The style in which murals are painted varies from painting to painting. Richard Bagguely’s art includes faux finishes, Trompe l’oeil and Mural pieces.
