The Secret History of Mural Art

What is mural art?

A mural is essentially a large realistic painting which is painted on a solid surface such as a wall, a ceiling or a permanent fixture.  Murals are not ordinary paintings; these paintings have a purpose which is deeper than what we can perceive through our eyes. Mural art can be easily identified as they are painted according to the interiors of a place or room with a slightly different artistry than the normal art forms.

Muralists pay great attention to the details in order to assure that the space is accurately interpreted in terms of the dimensions and lighting. Outdoor murals are quite common; you have most likely seen one on the side of a wall on your travels. Muralists are mostly commissioned by owners to create exterior murals. The time spent on a mural depends on the price paid by the hirers. Street murals are usually sponsored by the government or a business to attract passersby.

Where does mural art originate from?

Mural art originated 30,000 years ago when murals were engraved into exteriors.  The first mural paintings were allegedly carved into caves; historians have discovered the paintings dating back to the upper Palaeolithic times. Many ancient murals have been preserved by the caves in which they were carved in.  The carvings in fact capture the lifestyle and inhabitant of the people during this period of time.  We are able to piece together our own anecdotes and understand the people culturally with these historical paintings.

Modern murals

Modern murals are typically painted using oil paints or water-based paints.  Contemporary art is very different to traditional murals and it has now been adapted to be painted on canvases and then transferred onto walls, ceilings or permanent fixtures.

The style in which murals are painted varies from painting to painting. Richard Bagguely’s art includes faux finishes, Trompe l’oeil and Mural pieces.

Mural art can define almost everything from comic characters and real life events to huge landscapes and historical events. An amazing artwork requires a perfect subject and an experienced hand of mural artist. People say that sky is the limit of imagination; I would rather say you can depict all your imagination with this traditional art-work. Another great thing about murals is that you feel involved throughout the whole process; you are free to add anything new with the help of mural artist and with little bit of your creativity.

What is a Mural?

A Mural is artwork of painting done on any flat-surface directly. The artist performing this rare art is called Muralist. Ancient history has records of many Mural Artists living in civilizations of countries, dating back centuries before Christ. While excavating archeological sites, scientists have unearthed many such artworks existing and living beyond times.

How Mural Artists differ from Painting Artists?

You know well, right from the olden days there have been innumerable artists painting pictures on canvas. They bring into life any image or scenery through their deft hands and give vent to their creative instincts, to paint the picture which “speaks” to the viewers by their aesthetic beauty. The materials used by these artists are mostly water-colours, prepared through careful formulas in the olden days from herbs and green-leaves.

A modern Mural Artist is in no way different from bringing out creativity with imagination to draw numerous figures, scenes and pictures. The major difference between the former and the latter is painting artists use a board or canvas, which comes to them in front; whereas Mural Artists have to go near the flat or curved surface wherever it is and draw the pictures, keeping their balance in precarious positions. So considering from the angle of difficulty, Mural Artists excel by miles.

What are the methods available for Mural Artists?

Original Mural Artists should not be confused with artists behind mass production of pre-fabricated murals, and decals called wall-paper murals. A real Mural Artist is one engaged for a specific project of providing Mural Art in homes, theaters, commercial places and worshipping places, as the case may be. These Mural Artists often use oil-paints, emulsions or acrylic paint varieties available nowadays to give perfection to their artworks.

Depending upon the size of the project, Mural Artists engage teams of artists and assistants accordingly, and finish the job to the complete satisfaction of their clients.  They measure the paintable surface first and discuss your requirements thread-bare, to arrive at an amicable contract for Mural Art work.

How Mural artworks can astonish your visitors?

A home or commercial premises receive visitors. People spend money to decorate the interior and exterior of the premises, in order to make an eye-pleasing appeal for the visitors. Mural Artists are capable of bringing forth huge portraits and paintings looking almost live in three dimensions for the viewers. Depending upon your budget and wishes they can create any picture, photograph, image, scenery or designs with alluring colour-combinations and artwork. Certainly by seeing well-finished Mural artworks inside your premises, your visitors tend to open their jaws wide in bewilderment.
